The first greeting cards were sent by the Chinese, who used to send each other messages of good will for the New Year, the Egyptians would also send their greetings on scrolls made from papyrus. As early as the fifteenth century people were sending paper cards to each other in parts of Europe. Handmade paper Valentines cards were also exchanged in parts of Europe.
With the advancement of printing techniques and the introduction of the affordable postage stamp by the mid 1800's, greeting cards became more popular and the first Christmas cards appeared in 1843. In the 1860's, cards started to be mass produced and in 1930 colour cards were introduced, humorous cards started to appear in the 1940's.
